Overview
Suitable for all ages
If you get a sunny day in Wellington, this is the beach that locals wanting an alternative to Oriental Bay often head to. Largely sheltered from a north/north-westerly wind, with a big wide beach, grassy area and generally calm shallow water, this beach has it all.
Go prepared with sand play and water toys and you could easily spend the day here. There’s a cafe on the main road for takeaway drinks or food or take a picnic with you. There are rock pools at either end of the beach which are worth exploring if you’re there at low tide. Star fish, cats eyes and cocker bullies are all common in these clear waters.
There are toilets and an outdoor shower at cafe end of the beach and a spacenet just near here too. Big trees around the grassy area provide some shade at certain times of the day, otherwise look to take your own shade tent with you. The beach is patrolled during the summer months only.
You could easily tie a visit to this beach in with lunch or a snack at Chocolate Fish Cafe or a walk to Massey Memorial.
