The Mount walks and beaches, Mount Maunganui

Overview

Suitable for all ages

Walking around the base of The Mount (Maouo) should be doable for all ages. It’s 3.4km and the path is suitable for buggies. For access points and toilets, please see the map here. You can also walk and push a buggy to the top but it’s very steep and takes quite a bit of effort!

Pilot Bay is a sheltered beach good for collecting shells while the water is shallow and great for paddling.

On the other side, Main Beach is better if you’re after waves for boogie boarding etc, although it’s worth bearing in mind that it gets very, very busy in in December/January. There are lifeguards patrolling in the summer months so make sure the whole family swims between the flags. It’s common for there to be large waves at this beach, so keeping to the flags or respecting closed beach signs, is particularly important. There are change facilities, a playground and places to buy food and drink all within 100 metres of the beach.

Beaches, walks and ice creams often go together, so you might want to check out the local favourite, Copenhagen Cones here.
