Snorkelling at Poor Knights Islands, Tutukaka

Overview

Suitable for all ages

The water around Poor Knights Islands arguably provides some of the best diving and snorkelling to be had in New Zealand. If you’re around Northland and want to get a taste for what lies beneath, Perfect Day Ocean Cruises come highly recommended as being great for families. With tours meeting at 10.30am you’ll be gone for the best part of the day – but what a day! The boat, with indoor and outdoor seating and a live fish cam to see the marine life passing right underneath, takes you on the 23km journey to the volcanic islands (taking around 40-45 minutes).

On the way, you might have the chance to spot dolphins and at certain times of the year even whales while you’re on board. During the trip the staff members will talk to each passenger about their abilities in the water and kit you out with any equipment that you need. They have noodles and floatation devices for anyone that can’t swim and floats with viewing windows for kids that can’t or don’t want to swim. If you’d rather not get wet but still want to get out onto the water, you can borrow a kayak or SUP to explore, great for teenagers! Otherwise, jump off the platform and have a swim. There are snorkels and masks, wetsuits and life jackets to borrow for all shapes and sizes. All you need to do is turn up with your swimming things and towels, sunblock and hats.

Inside the boat food and drink is served in a buffet style so you can help yourself whenever you’re hungry. This includes sandwiches, salads, platters and hot soup. Once everyone is back on board (around 2pm), the boat leaves its anchor point to tour the Islands including going inside the largest sea cave in the world. During this part of the trip, staff provide information about the area, sea life and history of the people whilst also pointing out any marine life, birds and other animals that are visible. While it’s not the cheapest day out, it will be an unforgettable day out! Booking essential.
