Swimming at the Wharf, Opotiki

Overview

Suitable for all ages of good swimmers (although supervised paddling is also an option)

Sea swimming in Opotiki can be a bit wild for kids. The Waioeka River can provide a good alternative and there’s no salt or sand to wash off after you’ve finished! At the boat ramp, there’s a slide and two rope swings which both make exciting ways of getting into the water. Alternatively, you can jump off the wharf or step into the water from the boat ramp. Once immersed, stronger swimmers can try to swim to the pontoon. At the far end of the wharf, people often try their hand at fishing. It’s worth noting that being so close to the sea, this river is affected by the tides, so check the depth of water before jumping off the low wharfs and supervise kids well as the current can be strong.
