Silver Stream Railway, Upper Hutt

Overview

Suitable for all ages

Only operating on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, these steam or diesel hauled trains or sometimes a railcar have been lovingly restored and make you feel like you’re traveling back in time. The 1.5km track takes about 15 minutes as a return trip and you pay once, but travel as many times as you want. You can move around the carriages when the train is moving so if your kids can’t sit still, it’s OK. You can even go out onto the viewing platforms to see the scenery passing by! The engine moves from one end of the train to the other for the return journey which is fun to watch.

There’s a small shop at the station selling drinks and ice creams. There’s also picnic tables if you take your own food.

You could tie a visit to the trains in with a playground visit to either Maidstone Max or Harcourt Park.
