Southland Museum – Niho o te Taniwha, Invercargill

Overview

Suitable for all ages

This museum in Invercargill has 2 features which come recommended by other families. The first is the ‘Tuatarium’ which is home to over 100 tuatara of all different ages, from babies to ‘Henry’, who is over 110 years old! You don’t actually have to go inside to see the tuatara, as they can be viewed from glass windows outside on the north side.

The other recommendation comes for the school holiday ‘Great Museum Hunt’ which allows kids to go round the museum with an activity sheet finding answers to the Hunt. There’s a new activity sheet every holiday. Ask for this at the information desk.

The rest of the museum houses a mix of permanent and changing exhibitions, so you should find something that interests them. Overall it’s a great place to keep kids entertained, especially if it’s an indoor kind of day.
